SHE'S....LIKE A SHOT.
So (fingers crossed) I am leaving for China this week. My grant money still has not hit but I have a loan which should hit this week from Fern/Tom which will allow me to leave on Wednesday. Blogger, Wordpress, and Typepad do not work over there so I created a blog for over there where I can put up photos etc...HERE IT IS. Yeah yeah, the template is cheesy but it was that or anime.
I have so much to do!
Recently received/completed vaccines for my trip to China:
Typhoid
Hepatitus A
Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis
HPV
I also have malaria pills
I feel so...immune.
Bought my Jesus Lizard tickets!
Youtube is also blocked over there so here is my fill for now:
My dream musical group? Radical feminist power electronics.
Also, it should be known that I am REALLY REALLY going to miss youtube and ONTD (no livejournal in China either) while I am in China.
A list of television shows I have asked my mother to DVR for me:
True Blood
Say Yes to the Dress
NYC Prep
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
The Fashion Show
Charm School

writing is hard part 5 or 6
Mega writer's block...writing about nature drone is hard? I am not good at music writing most of the time, this is a fact. Some non-tape things that are keeping me sane:
Cold Cave and Prurient - Laurels of Erotomania (Live)
No, I am not one of the commenters! However there are many awesome things about this video.
Incapacitants - Live at No Fun Fest 2007
The greatest Japanese noise act, HANDS FUCKING DOWN. Except, there are moments in Masonna's back catalog that make me question this statement. However, Incapacitants still rule more than anyone else.

hopelessly devoted
In honor of Diana Wong's ecstatic reaction to "Challenger," I am posting the full interview I did with C. Spencer Yeh about No Fun Fest. My questions were dumb but his answers were thoughtful and insightful. This dude rules.
From my estimation, you have played, either as Burning Star Core or with others, every No Fun Fest since the first one in 2004. In your opinion, how has the festival changed since then?
Well I think it's stayed pretty consistent in terms of mission; venues change and the number of stages etc., along with it changes in the atmosphere, but there's been a relative consistency throughout. That Carlos always keeps a close eye with mellow hand and follows his own various instincts helps this.
What have been some of your favorite NFF moments, either as a performer or as a spectator?
Overall my personal favorite installments of the fest has to be the 2007 one at The Hook -- four nights long! Though unfortunately through airline fuck-ups I missed most of the first night.
As a performer, how do you change your style from when you are playing as Burning Star Core and when you are playing with a group?
Well, in Burning Star Core I usually have a specific set in mind -- compositions with room for improvisation and the players' own interpretations to a degree, but still pre-determined. With a group improvisation situation, it's basically not my project so...
This year you are playing with Rafael Toral and Trevor Tremaine - how did that come together?
I'd known of Rafael and his work for a while (first time was seeing him in Chicago in 96 doing "Wave Field") but over time we eventually connected. Then Portuguese artist Joao Paolo Feliciano (who's been friends and collaborator with Toral quite a bit over the years) had a show at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. For his piece "The Blues Quartet" he assembled a group -- himself, Rafael, Lee Ranaldo, and Trevor Tremaine. I ended up sitting in on a piece at the end, and so it went from there. Rafael was planning a tour of the U.S. around this time and asked if we'd like to play a few dates; Carlos heard about it and asked us for the fest as well.
What acts are you looking forward to seeing the most at this year's Fest?
Answering this question post-fest, so it's a little tough. From a strict overview standpoint, many of the curatorial choices this year maintained focus/avoided stagnation without feeling like stretches/recycling. People noted the heavy "rock" element with Thrones, Bardo Pond, etc.; well, in previous years Sightings and Religious Knives both appeared, arguably with the "rock" element. And then, various expressions of synthesizers -- you have Blank Dogs, Cold Cave, Xeno & Oaklander, but then there's Pulse Emitter, Emeralds, Raglani, etc. So, rhyme and balance. Sons of God, Schmickler/Rehberg, those choices were exciting for me to see personally, as those are a bit rare to catch in the states. And, post-fest, that for many Yellow Tears stole the show the way I felt Air Conditioning/American Band did a couplea years ago, that's just a major part of what the event has become about.
Also, I forgot to mention one of the sets I was looking forward to this weekend was part of the tie-in event at the New Museum --- Robert Beatty performing soundtrack to Takeshi Murata's new video work. Unfortunately I had to run out due to soundcheck that afternoon.

noise nomads and me pt. 2
SECOND DAY OF NO FUN FEST COVERAGE
Here is the interview I did with Yellow Tears. My questions are dumb (fact) because 1. it was finals week/moving out week and I was dead in the head and 2. This was before I realized that Yellow Tears are basically the best group...ever.
Yellow Tears have never played No Fun Fest before, what are you looking forward to about the performance? Have any of you ever attended and do you have any particularly great memories of it?
Yellow Tears has never played No Fun, but two of us performed last year in the band HALFLINGS.. That sticks out in our minds as a great memory, sharing the basement with our friends The Cathode Terror Section, Cleanse, Shallow Waters, and Ahlzagailzehguh. The Hospital Productions-curated night in the basement at the Hook in 2006 (the first year any of us attended) is another GREAT memory with such acts as Deathpile, Grunt, and Sickness defiling the venue and audience.
What can we expect to see on Saturday - what will your setup be like? Will you be wearing shirts?
We performed a mix of songs from the Pissmop LP and the new Don't Cry 12", both on Hospital Productions. Despite some sound issues on the part of the venue (intense crackling from speakers) I think it went over well. Our songs are extremely sample based with additional electronics, sheetmetal, etc. utilized.
Who else are you excited to see perform this weekend?
We were extremely excited to see CON-DOM but unfortunately he had to drop off the bill due to medical problems. Grey Wolves, Xeno and Oaklander, Emeralds, and Prurient/Drumm were highlights.
